Giethoorn, NL Photos

Giethoorn in Overijessel Province is sometimes described as the prettiest town in the Netherlands. The town has many day trip visitors, and is best seen in the late afternoon when the crowds have departed. The town's unusual layout came about because of the town's history of peat cutting. The small canals were needed to transport the harvested peat. Today these canals are lined with beautiful farm style buildings and used for tourist boats.
