Claret Jugs Photos

Red wine from Bordeau, France was widely exported in the 19thC, but would over time precipitate particles. Thus, the wine needed to be decanted into other bottles before serving. Attractively designed reusable claret bottles (jugs) became a fashion. Other red wines such as Port also suffered particles and required serving bottles, but of different shapes to keep these libations from being confused. Engraved metal labels to hang around the necks of bottles were also common.
